Scenes from John Bortle's HO Hudson Highlands RR

On a late autumn afternoon in 1941, a short NYNH&H freight with trackage rights over the Hudson Highlands RR trundles eastward toward the up-state city of Jacksboro, NY, visible in the distance. The scene encompasses well the urban-to-rural theme of John's HHRR.

Only a small portion of the yet to be completed City of Jacksboro is visible here but like any growing metropolis, it needs plenty of public transportation. Not only is it served by two rail lines, it boasts its own elevated rapid transit system, the terminus of which is seen here, snaking its way between a cogested host of stately downtown structures.

The Walker Coal Co. of Putney, NY, is about to get a load of anthracite, courtesy of the Hudson Highlands RR. The aging but hard working camelback #283 is typical of the road's motive power, although some diesels are starting to appear on the property..

A Hudson Highlands 2-6-0 camelback Mogul is switching a car into American Tool & Die's siding. Out on the main, a diesel-powered freight drag is just emerging from the east portal of Putney Tunnel. Set in New York's Hudson Valley and nearby western New England in the autumn of 1941, the layout is still undergoing intense construction and is not yet ready to accept visitors. Perhaps during the '09 National?

In the sleepy, pre-war, autumnal days of October 1941, the hamlet of Putney, NY, basks in the soft warmth of an Indian Summer afternoon. The only sound to break the spell is that of the departing peddler freight, with only its caboose still in sight.

Delaware & Hudson Alco C-628’s pound their way through downtown Schenectady, New York, passing the venerable former New York Central station, sometime around 1969. The New York Central is no more, and the legendary Alco plant will close down by the end of the decade. Dominic Bourgeois has captured this moment in time on his HO scale modules, which will be on display during the convention. PHOTO BY DOMINIC BOURGEOIS

Brand new Alco Centuries lead a D&H freight past the connection to the former New York Central at Schenectady, circa 1969. This finely crafted scene was created by Dominic Bourgeois of Montreal, who will be displaying his modules at the upcoming NER Fall Convention. The scene was inspired by the interesting post-industrial environment that once existed here, and will be instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with the area. PHOTO BY DOMINIC BOURGEOIS
